Hockey Canada has been embroiled in scandal and scrutiny for months over its history of grossly mishandling sexual assault allegations.

Since 1989, the sports organization has paid out $8.9 million to quietly settle sexual assault cases involving junior hockey players out of a slush fund comprised of registration fees paid by parents. It’s not an isolated incident. It isn’t one bad apple. Canada’s sports minister says there is a “systemic problem” of sexual violence and toxic masculinity in Canada’s hockey culture.
