SUMMARY:Rural & Remote Health: Community Engagement Towards a Fit-for-Purpose Rural Workforce
DESCRIPTION:This month the Division of Social Accountability directs its attention to rural and remote health. In April of 2022\, the DSA office spent time in consultation with community partners and heard that the lack of services in rural and remote areas continues to have an adverse impact on their services and on the lives of the people they serve. \nIn our province\, where half of our population lives outside of large urban centre\, the impacts of these health inequities continues to grow. How do we train physicians that can contribute to policy decisions that advance health equity in our province? The DSA believes that it is through genuine engagement with community stakeholders and advocates\, and leveraging the concerns of faculty\, students\, and staff that we can respond to the complex challenges of being a socially accountable organization in a province with rapidly changing needs. \n Join us for our Health Equity Webinar Series on January 27th where we hear from Dr. Sarah Strasser\, Emeritus Professor of Rural Health University of Waikato\, New Zealand and Dr. Roger Strasser\, Emeritus Professor of Rural Health University of Waikato\, New Zealand and Founding Dean Emeritus Northern Ontario School of Medicine where they will share their extensive experience using community engagement to build a fit-for-purpose rural workforce.

SUMMARY:Canada’s Game – violence\, misogyny and racism in hockey
DESCRIPTION:*Please note this event starts at 6:00 pm CST* \nHockey Canada has been embroiled in scandal and scrutiny for months over its history of grossly mishandling sexual assault allegations. \nSince 1989\, the sports organization has paid out $8.9 million to quietly settle sexual assault cases involving junior hockey players out of a slush fund comprised of registration fees paid by parents. It’s not an isolated incident. It isn’t one bad apple. Canada’s sports minister says there is a “systemic problem” of sexual violence and toxic masculinity in Canada’s hockey culture. \nJoin us at this online panel moderated by Tamara Taggart where we will address the Hockey Canada scandal as a jumping off point to interrogate the damaging culture at the heart of hockey in Canada.

SUMMARY:Stories Beyond Stories: True Crime and Investigative Journalism Podcasts
DESCRIPTION:*Please note this event starts 12 pm CST* \nTrue crime podcasts have matured well beyond blood and gore recountings into deeply reported features. Leading podcast journalists will explore the role of the journalist in telling these stories\, how podcasts have changed the way we think about investigative crime narratives and how the medium is building relationships with audiences. \nThe webcast is 60 minutes: 45 minutes of moderated conversation\, followed by 15 minutes of audience Q&A. \nThe virtual discussion takes place on January 26 at 1:00 p.m.\, and features independent podcast producer and host Kathleen Goldhar and editor and partner at Tortoise Studios\, Basia Cummings. SUMMARY:Beyond Consent: Disability Justice and Anti-Violence
DESCRIPTION:*Please note this event starts at 12 pm CST* \nJoin us for the first installment of our “Beyond Consent” Speakers Series in 2023! \nEach month\, this series hosts grassroots activists and allies in the anti-violence movements in order to train\, educate\, and inspire a new generation of leaders\, communities\, and organizations in the fight to end violence. \nThis month’s discussion focuses on the intersections of disability justice and anti-violence organizing. People with disabilities face disproportionate rates of sexual violence compared to non-disabled people. Despite this\, anti-violence organizing can be inaccessible and exclusionary to survivors\, advocates\, and allies with disabilities. This begs the question – how can we work to make anti-violence work more accessible\, as well as integrate disabled perspectives into our advocacy and community care?
