SUMMARY:Moose Hide Campaign Talks Indigenous Masculinity
DESCRIPTION:Gain insight on Indigenous Masculinities with 5 actionable tools to get you mobilized within your family\, community\, and across Turtle Island! This session explores the intersectional nature of Indigenous masculinity. Building healthier masculinities is a important step in standing up against violence towards women and children.\n \nMoose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led grassroots movement of men\, boys\, and all Canadians – standing up to end violence against women and children. Efforts to address domestic and gender-based violence have historically been led by women and women’s organizations. The Campaign was founded on the belief that men and boys need to step up and take action too\, challenging behaviour that leads to violence and developing a culture of healthy masculinity. SUMMARY:National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
DESCRIPTION:December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada\, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at L’Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women. \nDecember 6th represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality\, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. Finally\, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. (Status of Women Canada)

SUMMARY:Educational Leadership and Administration at the Intersections of Gender
DESCRIPTION:The percentage of women in leadership roles\, as defined by both Leadership and Superintendents Quality Standards (LQS and SLQS) of Alberta Education\, declines as the level of leadership increases. The Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) has never had a woman as its Executive Secretary\, and a mere 13% of school superintendents are women. Yet\, The Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund reported that in 2017\, 76% of the teaching population was female. Research at the intersection of gender highlights various factors that come to play for women in leadership: family life\, caretaking\, socio-cultural roles and perceptions\, age\, race\, ethnicity\, education and economics. Through a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant held between the University of Alberta\, the Alberta Teachers’ Association\, and the College of Alberta School Superintendents\, Dr. Samira ElAtia (UAlberta) and Dr. Elissa Corsi (Alberta Teachers’ Association) aim to delve into understanding the intersections of gender in educational leadership by reaching out to school divisions across the province. \nThey ask questions like: What are the beliefs and perceptions of school leaders regarding the role and effect of family leaves on entry and progression in educational leadership? What are the beliefs of school leaders\, including both strengths and challenges\, regarding the role of unpaid labour on the entry and progression in educational leadership? How are the intersectionalities of gender with race\, ethnicity\, age\, education and family status reflected in school leadership in Alberta?

SUMMARY:Intersectionality\, Feminist Solidarity & Digital Organizing in Ghana
DESCRIPTION:Join the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and Dr. Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed\, ICRW’s 2022 Paula Kantor Award winner\, for an event highlighting Dr. Mohammed’s research. There has been a great deal of dialogue on intersectionality and feminism\, particularly in terms of social movements within the U.S. context. However\, there is growing scholarly and activist practices in Africa that are grounded in intersectionality. \nIn this conversation\, Dr. Mohammed will discuss activism of Ghanaian gender and feminist organizations in relation to state-sanctioned violence directed at queer and trans people. Although there is increasing visibility in activism and organizing around issues affecting queer and trans Ghanaians\, Dr. Mohammed argues that feminist and gender advocacy groups need to work toward grounding their efforts in intersectionality and feminist accountability frameworks to propel the growth of feminist organizing across the country. Dr. Mohammed will use Ghana as a case study to understand social movements in the larger African context.

SUMMARY:Well-Versed Lecture with Joshua Whitehead
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Whitehead aims to explore how we write with\, of\, and from our bodies in ways that prioritize cyclical relationships with all animate beings (including non-human). Questions he might ask: Does a wound hold knowledge? How is our body in relationship with the plethora of bodies we are in community with: water\, earth\, stone\, literature? How do we prioritize the realm of the ancestral in the guise of a dream as a writing praxis? In this talk\, Whitehead will offer a guide to his writing styles and interests that spans a larger constellation of knowing inherent within the noun: body.
